SHAKESPEARE AS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE – TROILUS AND CRESSIDA
AT THEATRE OF THE NO
From Saturday, March 29 and on every Saturday & Sunday until the end of May
Theatre of the NO presents a bold new adaptation of Troilus and Cressida, William
Shakespeare’s most defiantly un-epic war and love story. Premiering on Saturday, March
29, the production will run every Saturday and Sunday at 20:00 until May 24-25, offering
audiences a raw, immersive, and unfiltered experience of one of the Bard’s most rebellious
plays.
A Shakespearean Tale of Love, War, and Disillusionment
Nine years into the Trojan War, with both sides at a standstill, the Greeks propose an
unexpected peace: return Helen, and they will go home. But Troy’s proud King Priam
refuses, instead demanding a duel between their greatest warriors. Meanwhile, his
youngest son, the bookish Troilus, has no interest in battle—his heart belongs to Cressida.
Priam sees an opportunity: if Troilus believes Cressida loves warriors, perhaps he will rise
to heroism. But love and war are never so simple.
As negotiations bring Cressida to the Greek camp and alliances shift, Odysseus cunningly
manipulates events to push Achilles into battle. A tragic duel, a brutal betrayal, and the
downfall of heroes lead to an ending where love is sacrificed for power, and ideals crumble
under the weight of reality. Troilus and Cressida challenges the myths of epic warfare,
revealing the absurdity, hypocrisy, and inevitable disillusionment that lurk beneath grand
narratives.
Honoring Shakespeare by Dishonoring Him – A Director’s Note
Troilus & Cressida was never meant to be comfortable. Shakespeare wrote for the
common man as much as for the elite, crafting plays that were performed in a chaotic,
interactive environment—not preserved in an academic vacuum. This production strips the
play down to its essentials, reimagining it for a cast of five, making the entire Trojan War
unfold through the love story of its doomed protagonists. The setting? A bar-theater,
where actors play among the tables and audiences are invited to participate. Guests can
choose a side—Greek or Trojan—before the play begins, influencing their experience.
Some may even book minor speaking roles ahead of time, surprising their friends with a
moment in the spotlight.
By keeping Shakespeare’s essence but reshaping its form, Troilus and Cressida becomes
not a relic of the past, but a living, breathing commentary on human ideals—ones that still
falter when tested by war, ambition, and desire. This is Shakespeare as he should be:
accessible, immediate, and, above all, exhilarating.
