Τα Impromptus, έργο 90 (1827) του Schubert συνδυάζουν λυρικό βάθος με αυστηρή δομική ακρίβεια. Παρά τον αυτοσχεδιαστικό τους τίτλο, πρόκειται για επιμελώς επεξεργασμένα έργα - από το θυελλώδες άνοιγμα σε ντο ελάσσονα, έως το λυρικό σολ ύφεση μείζονα και το δεξιοτεχνικό φινάλε σε λα ύφεση. Κάθε κομμάτι αποκαλύπτει, με διακριτικό αλλά έντονο τρόπο, τη χαρακτηριστική μελαγχολία και γοητεία του Schubert.
Τα Méditation και Autrefois της Chaminade φωτίζουν τη λυρική της ιδιοφυΐα και τον ιδιαίτερο ρομαντικό της λόγο. Με λεπτές αποχρώσεις και νοσταλγική γοητεία, τα έργα αυτά επανατοποθετούν τη Chaminade ως μια ξεχωριστή και σημαντική φωνή του ρομαντισμού.
Η Μπαλάντα αρ. 4 (1842) του Frédéric Chopin θεωρείται η πιο σύνθετη και δομικά εξελιγμένη από τις τέσσερις. Δύο αντιθετικά μουσικά θέματα υφαίνονται σε μια δραματική αφήγηση, η οποία εξελίσσεται σταδιακά μέχρι να κορυφωθεί με μια εκθαμβωτική, συναισθηματικά φορτισμένη έξαρση.
