Lazaristes Monastery – Sokratis Karantinos Stage

The theatre in the Lazaristes Monastery – Sokratis Karantinos Stage (Kolokotroni 25-27, Stavroupoli) is another of the National Theatre of Northern Greece’s main stages. The Lazaristes complex has a long history in Western Thessaloniki. It takes its name from the monks of the Order of St. Vincent, known as the Lazarists, who first built a monastic complex on the site in 1886.

The monastery was declared a listed building in 1980 and purchased by the Greek State in 1983. After the restoration and extension of the building had been made the subject of an architectural competition (1988-1990), construction started immediately. It was completed in 1998, having been incorporated into the Technical Programme of the European Capital of Culture - Thessaloniki 1997. Performances began to be staged in the Theatre without delay on completion of the building work.
